Paper FAQ

Q: What kind of paper do you make?
A: Most of the paper we make is from wood based recycled fibers. However, if your project requires cotton or some other type of fiber we would be glad to help you out.

Q: Do you make custom paper?
A: We do! We realize that not everyone wants the same color of paper. We love nothing more than to create a custom paper for your specific projects. Looking for more than color? Scented, iridescent, inclusions…we will try everything at least once.

Q: Is there a minimum amount of paper I need to order?
A: Yes and No. If it is a stock paper than you can purchase just one sheet. If it is a custom paper then a minimum of one batch will be required which amount to 35-40 parent sheets.

Q: What is the recycled fiber content of your papers?
A: The short answer is that our paper is made from 100% recycled fibers. Here’s the long answer: We make all of our paper from 100% post-industrial waste. At least 30% is post-consumer waste and the remaining is pre-consumer waste. We get our paper fiber from a local company. We don’t ship it in from hundreds of miles away–it comes from our backyard!

Q: What’s the difference between “recycled” and “post-consumer recycled?”
A: Pre-consumer fiber is spent material collected from paper manufacturers, printers,
etc., before it reaches the end-user (you). Post-consumer waste is material that’s collected from end-users (you) and then recycled. Using post-consumer fiber reduces pressure on forests, saves water and energy, and diverts solid waste from landfills.

Q: Why don’t you use 100% post-consumer fibers?
A: We would love to make all of our papers out of 100% PCW fibers, but the irregular color and texture limits our ability to maintain our standards in quality and consistency. Since some of our papers are made for projects that require very specific colors and textures, we find that using the pre-consumer, or 100% post-industrial fiber, allows us to consistently maintain our quality standards. If you are interested in doing a project with 100% post-consumer fiber, please feel free to contact us about the possibilities and minimums required.

Q: What is the size of your paper?
A: Our parent sheet is 19″x25″ with a full deckle edge. We can trim it to 18″x24″ so you have a clean edge to work with.

Q: How thick is your paper?
A: Our standard weight paper is comparable to card stock (a 120lb weight). Because all of our paper is handmade, this may vary ever so slightly. If you are interested in thicker or thinner sheets for a specific project, just contact us and we’ll let you know what we can do.

Q: How much paper can you produce?
A: We have produced over 5,000 sheets per week when the workload called for it, but most of the time we average 900, 1,200 sheets per week. Our standard sheet size is 19”x25” with a full deckle edge (meaning rough edge).

Q: How long does it take?
a: Depending on how full our schedule is and the size of the job, we can get most paper orders made, packaged and shipped within 2-3 weeks from the date we receive the purchase order and deposit. However, it is always a good idea to ask us about our current scheduling when placing your order. We do try to keep many colors in stock for immediate shipping.

Q: Can I buy just paper?
A: Absolutely! When we started Porridge Papers we were just a papermill! Pulp runs through our veins. You want one sheet or 20,000 sheets, just give us a call and we will be glad to help you out.
